Post-operative Instructions: Inguinal Herniorrhaphy, Hydrocelectomy and Orchiopexy
Quiet play for 3-4 weeks. Avoid roughhousing, running, climbing, bicycle riding, swimming, etc. for 3-4 weeks. May return to school in 2-4 days, when child is comfortable but no playground or gym activities for 3-4 weeks. Infants can lie on their tummies. It is important to avoid bumping the surgical area until healing has taken place. Remember that children often feel better before healing is complete and cannot be relied upon to limit their activities by themselves.
CARE OF INCISION
Your child will have a “Clear coating” or ster-strips with a “clear coating” over the incision. This type of dressing peels off by itself. It does not require any special care other than keeping the area clean and dry.
The stitches dissolve by themselves, but may not entirely dissolve for several months.
May not take a bath for 48 hours.
Start with clear liquids-soup, kool-Aid, Pedialyte, pop or juice (breast milk is a clear liquid) and if tolerated well progress to half and then full strength milk/formula. A normal diet may be resumed the next day.
Give Tylenol every 4 hours if needed for discomfort. Generally, children should not be given Tylenol more than four times in one day.
4-11 months 80 mg = four times/day
12-23 months 120 mg = four times/day
Over 2 years Read dosage instructions on bottle
You will also receive a prescription for Codeine to use if regular Tylenol does not help to relieve the discomfort.
