Urethral Strictures

A stricture is scar-tissue blocking the urethra (urinary channel). Causes include trauma, infection and prior instrumentation of the urethra. Strictures lead to weak urinary stream and an inability to empty the bladder. Strictures do have a tendency to recur after treatment. We provide every type of procedure to repair the urethra including dilation, direct visual internal urethrotomy (DVIU) and urethroplasty. DVIU is a minimally-invasive procedure that cuts the stricture from inside the urethra with the aid of a scope. Urethroplasty is more involved, requiring an incision underneath the scrotum and a short hospital stay, but has higher success rates. Both procedures are followed by a short period of catheterization.
