Comprehensive Urology to Participate in START International Prostate Cancer Trial
William Beaumont Hospital and Comprehensive Urology have been designated one of the approximately 25 centers worldwide to participate in the exciting new trial called START (Surveillance Therapy Against Radical Treatment). It is a study investigating whether men with non-aggressive forms of prostate cancer need any initial radical treatment for this condition (standard treatment), or whether they may be better off with close monitoring and delayed treatment for select cases (so called "active surveillance"). Past studies have indicated that this policy of active surveillance seems safe, but it remains unclear who may benefit most from this strategy. If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, it is worthwhile to ask one of our physicians whether or not you are a candidate for the trial. START is sure to be one of the most important prostate cancer trials anywhere for years to come.
