The cells that line the bladder, ureter and renal pelvis are called transitional cells. These cells may become cancerous (transitional cell carcinoma). Cancer of the ureter or renal pelvis can be managed in different ways, but most commonly requires removal of the whole kidney and ureter down to the bladder (nephroureterectomy). Less invasive procedures using scopes are also an option for select patients. Chemotherapy may be recommended either before or after surgery.
