Sexual Dysfunction

Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is a broad term that encompasses the various problems that keep a woman from having the sexual response she desires. Medical factors that contribute to FSD include hormonal changes (often brought on by menopause), pelvic pain, neurological problems, medication interactions, and cardiovascular conditions.

There are four classifications of female sexual dysfunction:

  • Desire Disorders: Low Desire (hypoactive desire disorder) is the most common type of FSD. Aversion Disorder is another type of desire disorder. It is the phobic avoidance and aversion of sexual contact. (Read: FDA Approves First Medication to treat HSDD)
  • Arousal/Stimulation Disorders: The inability to attain or maintain sufficient sexual excitement including lack of genital swelling and lubrication
  • Orgasmic Disorders: The delay in or absence orgasm after sufficient sexual stimulation and arousal
  • Pain Disorders: Pain in the genital area associated with intercourse (dyspareunia). Spasms of the pelvic floor muscles resulting in painful penetration (vaginismus)

Testing and Treatment

If a woman is not bothered or concerned by symptoms of female sexual dysfunction then no treatment is needed.

For women who are seeking solutions to their sexual wellness concerns, there is no “one size fits all” answer. The providers at the Urology San Antonio Center for Female Sexual Medicine are devoted to giving women the time and attention necessary to understand their complaints and offer individualized care.
Possible treatments include

  • An evaluation and adjustment of current medications such as anti-depressants that are known to affect a woman’s sexual desire
  • A review of the woman’s hormones levels and if indicated hormone supplementation with oral, vaginal or topical medications
  • Electrical stimulation and/or pelvic floor physical therapy to stimulate nerves and help strengthen or relax the pelvic floor muscles
  • Topical or oral medications to promote blood flow and increase genital arousal

Frequently Asked Questions

Female sexual medicine is the term used to describe the diagnosis and treatment female sexual dysfunction. Cosmetic gynecology or vaginal rejuvenation is not a treatment for female sexual dysfunction. Urology San Antonio providers do not provide cosmetic gynecologic procedures.

Because female sexual dysfunction concerns are tied to underlying medical concerns, health insurance may cover a portion of your evaluation and treatment.

For decades, urologists have recognized that men’s sexual function concerns are usually the result of a medical factor and not “all in the head.” As a result, urologists were among the first specialists to embrace the idea that women’s sexual function concerns can be rooted medical problems as well. Since treating FSD can be complex and time consuming, it is best to seek out a provider who is willing to devote the time and interest necessary to addressing your concerns. Many busy health care providers would prefer their patients see a provider whose clinical focus includes female sexual medicine.
